Dr. Awal Fuseini
Dr. Awal Fuseini is a meat scientist and Nuffield Farming Scholar with extensive experience in the agri-food sector, specialising in Halal meat regulatory and animal welfare issues around the world. He holds a PhD in Veterinary Sciences (Animal Welfare) from the University of Bristol, an MSc in Meat Science and Technology from Bristol University, and a BSc in Agriculture from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana.
He currently serves as Senior Halal Manager at the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) in the United Kingdom, a role he has held since 2017. In this position he facilitates knowledge exchange for farmers and meat industry stakeholders, contributes to policy discussions on agricultural and meat production, and expands export trade networks across diverse regions. Since 2025 he has also worked as a Technical Assessor (Abattoirs) for the Emirates International Accreditation Centre, assessing compliance with the GSO 993 and UAE S.993 global Halal standards.
Prior to AHDB, Dr. Fuseini was Certification Manager at the Halal Food Authority in London (2013–2015). During his doctoral studies he won the 2015 Humane Slaughter Association Research Training Scholarship and developed a novel stunning prototype for the humane slaughter of adult cattle. He has published more than eleven peer-reviewed scientific papers and is the author of Halal slaughter of livestock: Animal welfare science, history and politics of religious slaughter (Springer Nature, 2023) and co-author of Where does my Halal meat come from? (2024).
